RP characters meme
Ask anything you ever wanted (or not really sure you wanted) to know about any of my RPing characters, past, present or future.

This isn't a wise thing for me to open myself up to, I suppose, but I'm not known for my wisdom.

How much planning goes into the NPCs you portray? Do you usually have a lot of backstory set up before the gaming session, or are you just really good at improvising?
Traveler Farlandertwfarlan on June 13th, 2009 07:08 pm (UTC)
Well, you might have noticed that, in my fantasy worlds, all bartenders are members of the same family. (grin)

How much thought I've put into NPCs depends on if the party goes where I expected them to go. If so, then the named NPCs will have their personalities and likely responses to stimuli mapped out based on at least a rough backstory. I've at least got in mind a few key personality traits and attitudes for other NPCs I'd expect to be available for interaction in those expected locations. I haven't always got names for them all; I tend to populate a list in my head of general personalities and then apply them to people who didn't have semi-scripted encounters, fleshing them out on the fly.

If the PCs go off-track far enough, it's not quite all improv; it's about half improvisation, half re-use of experiences I'd had as a player. I've been known to recycle my own characters for use, either bringing them in for guest appearances as themselves (remember the elven sorcerer you guys encountered?) or just as stats with new names and backstories (the Iron Duke was a fleshed out, expected encounter, but in terms of personality and stats, he was an old character of mine with a new paint job).

Do you really not remember Varian spending all that time in the brothel, or did you just want to forget it ever happened?
Traveler Farlandertwfarlan on June 17th, 2009 05:43 pm (UTC)
Not remember? Shit, I got how many points of Stamina out of that? I wanted to do the same thing with every character.

Then again, I have to admit having a moment of amusement at the self-realization that I was the Mountain Dew guy in the kitchen.

Awww, can't do Youtube from work.

Ok, greatest regret with Varian? Best moment?
Traveler Farlandertwfarlan on June 17th, 2009 07:01 pm (UTC)
Biggest regret: I didn't handle his final fight intelligently, so his evil twin won. I didn't handle that well, either, but I was young and foolish, which is the cause of both.

Best moments with Varian all happened in solo play, to be honest. Only witness to any of them was Tim. I'm not sure I can narrow it down, in hindsight. If it tells you anything to hear that he's not my favorite character (despite being the longest-ran character), don't take away from that the idea that it wasn't great fun.

If I had to pick one thing witnessed by another player, though, it'd be the time with "Blade" after one of those incessant moments with Zenden Karris.

Oh not at all. Honestly, I no longer think of Kai as my greatest character. I had the most fun with him (mostly due to duration), but I think William, my first Harn character, was my best. Kai was too straight-forward, too black and white. I think I had much more depth with on his bad days that I ever had with Kai.
craigers01 on June 17th, 2009 07:44 pm (UTC)
I wanted to add though, that I have more friends from Kai's days than William's, and that's what is truely important to me.

So... What games are you playing these days?
Traveler Farlandertwfarlan on June 22nd, 2009 06:42 pm (UTC)
If you mean pen and paper based, sadly none.
If you mean MMO-ish, currently only World of Warcraft, though I'm in the pre-order for Champions Online when it opens in September.

Yeah, I'm kinda in the same boat. No PnP games. Just finished Mass Effect for the Xbox360. Did Resident Evil 5. Playing a little WoW, mostly on weekends. Had a 4E game going, but the game store we were playing at went out of business and the group broke up. But, I've been going over Harn rules with my buddy Leland, trying to simplify the combat rules a little and maybe speed it up some. Trying to simplify spellcasting too so that you don't have to roll (potentially) 30d6 to determine spell cost and stuff. Little things like that.

I've made a couple of attempts to get Tim to run a game under the old Quephter rules set, but no luck there either. It's almost like it's a chapter of his life he wants to put away forever.

Rocky just made an attempt to get him to run a reunion game, and that failed too. I'm not even getting occasional role play opportunities at this point. I think I'm gonna get stuck playing in moduals at Cons if I want to play at all. =(

Hey, have you ever tried Eve Online?
Traveler Farlandertwfarlan on June 23rd, 2009 02:38 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I tried it. Played it for a month or so, but I wasn't thrilled.
craigers01 on June 24th, 2009 02:15 pm (UTC)
Yeah, same thing here except I gave it 4 months or so.
Traveler Farlandertwfarlan on June 24th, 2009 03:20 pm (UTC)
Man, I'm barely thinking about games that aren't Champions Online right now. I'm intrigued by DC Universe Online, too, but they don't have a planned street date nailed down any more firmly than "sometime in 2010," and Champions Online comes out in September, so, y'know.

Can I have a 57d6 energyblast, IND, Req End, Focus?
Traveler Farlandertwfarlan on June 25th, 2009 05:09 pm (UTC)
It's not directly using the Champions PnP rules. It's using the official game universe IP. You could, however, build a tank who just happens to have a cannon like that to tote around, yes.
