Ginger in the kitchen
For those wondering about the Twitter reference I made to there being a ginger cat in the house, no, you didn't miss anything. Last night, we came home from PetSmart with a fourth cat for the household. He's a ginger tom currently named "Kansas," a rescue from someone who abandoned him out at a local lake. Note that he is declawed, which makes the monkeys who did that just extra brilliant so far as I'm concerned.

So far, my observations about Kansas are as follows:
He's curious enough to explore even while he's scared.
He understands "down" as a command.
He is very well aware of the proper use of a litter box, which he has demonstrated several times already.
He likes heights, especially ones where he can feel concealed. The top of the refrigerator is likely to become his domicile.
He is bigger than I thought.
He's friendly to human beings, remarkably so for new ones he barely knows, but he's not willing to approach the other cats yet.
He has a high voice but does not vocalize unless he's scared.

More as it develops, including pictures.

He's no Loki, but he's a big boy. We'll have to wait and see what kind of person he is over time.

well, it took Loki sixteen years to get that big (apparently male cats, even if only formerly male, never completely stop growing throughout their lives). how old is Kansas, assuming you know?

The rescue volunteer (who is a dearheart by the name of Kathi, for anyone in the vicinity who wants a cat or dog) said that their vet had estimated his age between 2 and 4 years. She was personally favoring the older end of the range. Once he's acclimated and I get more time to study his features close up, I'll give my opinion. I can't guess a human child's age within six years reliably, but I can guess most cats with a 6 month margin of error.

fair enough...

Okay, he understands "down" -- but does he obey it, or just convey his comprehension by giving you with a "Psh, right!" look before going back to what he was doing?
Traveler Farlandertwfarlan on April 11th, 2009 12:53 pm (UTC)
Fair question; he obeys it. My intent in saying that he understood it was to imply that he did as he was told to do. If he had just looked at me as though saying, "Yes, monkey, I know what you're doing, but I don't really care to do what you're asking," or as if he did not understand the implied "or else" and its consequences, I wouldn't have qualified it as "understanding."

Mrrrrrow! And is he obeying "Down" as a favor to the new humans who are feeding him?

He sounds lovely. Picspam, please, says Aelie the cat lover :)

So far, yes, he is obeying "down" with minimal hesitation consistent with a cat in a high place judging his descent before making a leap into unfamiliar territory.

There will almost assuredly be pictures, of him and of the other three, as well. It's been a while since I updated my album of pics of them, anyway. In his case, it may have to wait until he's more willing to sit still somewhere easily seen and for me to have the time at home with him. Perhaps Ali will take some pictures of him today; she's at home.

Why "Kansas"? Just curious.

EEEEE!!! I hope there will be pictures of all four quite soon (she hints with an abysmal lack of subtlety)

No idea. It's the name he already had. He answers to it, so he's stuck with it unless he can convince us to use something else.

Aww, welcome to the new kid.

Awww, I want to see pictures. There's no place like home!

There shall indeed be pictures. I will note that, in the pictures so far taken, Kansas comes out far more red-orange than he appears in person. Seen directly, he's on the yellow-orange end of the continuum, to my eyes at least.
