Everybody wants to rule the end of the world and I feel fine.
Ah, world domination and the end of human civilization as we have known it. Is there anything more satisfying? Answer: yes. Yes, there is, and it is a music source with just two simple songs activated at just the right moment.

As the Doomsday device is prepared and all is in readiness, the Overlord cues the music. As Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" comes to its final strains, the button is pushed, or the command code is given, or the spell that summons Demogorgon is cast or what have you, "The End" begins and the music crossfades into REM's "It's the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)."

Now that is satisfaction.

ever since the world didn't end at midnight 1999/2000 or 2000/2001, i've given up on this whole "doomsday" concept, y'know?

2012's always just around the corner. ;)

but i'm not a Mayan, so that date doesn't have any particular emotional resonance for me.

You're a Phanean, though. There's a significance there for us, too.

if the world does end, i'm sure i'll be one of the last to know...

The world won't end. Only human civilization is likely to be affected by these scenarios.

"human civilization" isn't going to end, although it might be severely modified. if you've got more than one human being left, they're going to have a civilization of some sort, even if it's a post-apocalyptic dystopia. and who knows - maybe they'll get it right the next time.

There's always a doomsday around the corner. I like Tommy Lee Jones' line from Men in Black:

"There's always an alien battle cruiser, or a Corellian death ray, or a plague intended to wipe out life on this miserable little planet. The only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they DO NOT KNOW ABOUT IT!"
