And we're surprised why?
Pope Palpatine recommending the return of the Latin Mass pisses off Jewish group.

Read the article. Then come back and tell me if you're really surprised by anything you read therein.

Note to Rabbi Rosen: You're worried that this liturgy presents Jews as being doomed in their faith. You're ignoring that the whole religion represents you as being doomed in your faith. Now, you show me where I'm wrong, but I wasn't aware that there was anything in Catholic dogma that says that Jews won't go to the Catholic Hell without first taking on Jesus as Saviour. The Vatican had done a lot to apologize for slaughtering Jews in the past, sure. Had they ever come out and said they were wrong about Jesus being the only way to avoid eternal damnation, though?

Note to everyone else: Have you forgotten that this man led the Inquisition? Call it the Conference for the Doctrine of the Faith if you like; a rose by any other name still gives me hives. This is Roman Catholicism, people. Conversion is job one.

Current Mood: bemused by people's short memories

Actually, they did do just that, quite recently. I'll have to track down the cite. Rich will get his hands on it faster- he pays more attention to what the church does.

However I don't know why anyone should think they're obligated *not* to offend people not of their faith. I mean they're far too busy offending other Catholics after doing away (again) with Limbo.

PS: Jews don't believe in hell anyway. Why do they care?

*eugh* They also pray for those of us who are Protestant. Well, "God-given Free Will" says they can pray for whomever they like. My cousins, who are Jewish, say "God primarily wants us to be successful". It offends my sensibilities (but that's the extent of it) that Catholics and Fundamentalists seem to think they can dictate to God what "successful" means. Or sometimes, as in this case, it simply gives my eyeballs - and my cousins' eyeballs, for that matter - a good rolling workout.

They can pray for anyone and anything they like. I can equally pray that their whole organization comes crashing down, that the vaults of the Vatican are opened to the world, that Catholicism is remembered in 50 years as an abberation we are finally rid of, and that Pope Palpatine is caught on camera molesting a young boy.

God can take his opinion of my life and shove it. I'm the one who has to live it, not him. The Ladies Athena, Hera, Aphrodite and the Queen Hekate listen to me and actually seem to give a damn, so I'll stick with them.

i do not give even the tiniest dingleberry upon a rat's ass what any of the Abrahamic religions decide to believe about each other, considering that ALL of them believe that i'm a demon-worshipping, baby-murdering, blasphemous whore.

You know, I really wish that people would stop trying to limit God by *their own* bigotries. The bible, the "Holy Word Of God" was written by MEN, and often dictated by the politics of the time. The bible also has some flagrant errors that are found in one "book" and no where else. Men are Not infailable.

I very much enjoy the magic of the mass. I find it lovely and soothing and fulfilling, personally. I suspect most people would be shocked and horrified if they realized just how much of it is ceremonial magic. (Sorry, I can't speel kat today, and my spell checker isn't working.) Going back to Church Latin? As an occasional mass, it might be nice, if they could insist the people actually learn what is being said. (Look at it this way, Latin teachers would again be in demand. :})

even though i tend to have a knee-jerk dislike of anything blatantly Christian, i have to admit that a classic Latin Mass is a beautifully-wrought piece of ritual. and some of the interweavings of Catholic practices and ceremonial magick in the Deryni universe are utterly breathtaking.

well speaking 'as a jew' ;) I would say that one of the things jews seem to most want is to be left alone

and speaking 'as a crypto jew' the re-inclusion of asking for the conversion of jews to be brought back into the mass is uncomfortably reminscent of the forced conversions and subsequent shame-filled hiding, running and survivial of thousands upon thousands of crypto jews for generations who are only now finding their way back
Traveler Farlandertwfarlan on April 27th, 2007 08:48 pm (UTC)
Honestly, that's about all I want for people to do for one another: leave each other alone. If people can do that, everything else will work itself out.
